First Amendment Freedoms

Channel One reported a story about the limitations of freedoms in Cuba. The government monitors the Internet usage of its citizens as well as what citizens may watch on television or read in the press. But what about your first amendment rights here in the U.S.?
Check out this video about your first amendment rights while hanging out at the mall with your friends. http://livewire.channelone.com/livewireplayer/livewire.html?releaseid=169011225
Do you think the mall policy is fair? Why or why not?

I don't think it's fair at all. First off, yelling. Don't you think enough people are talking in the mall? Yelling in my opinion wouldn't make it much louder.

As for grouping 5+, not fair either. You could be there with your family, or friends. You'd just have to act like you don't know each other if you wanted to go to the mall.

The First Amendment gives us freedom of speech, so why should a mall be able to take that away? Swearing should be allowed, but at a minimal, and anybody who swears too much should get kicked out. You should also remember that kids are in that mall too. They've probably heard those words before, but that still doesn't make it right for them to hear it again.

I do not think that it is fair, even though the first amendmrnt doesn't protect your rights there. You Should be able to have a little more freedoms in places such as a mall. But you don't have control of what happens so I guess it is kinda fair.

Yes,i do think the mall policy is fair,as some people do not like people cussing around them, and it makes it safe for children to go and not be exsposed to things like cussing. It ill also attract more customers,if thay know it is a clean place.

I think the mall poilicy is fair because you shouldn't cuss in public. Little kids might here you and pick up cussing themselves. Also it will make teens think twice before swearing in public.

I don't think people should be doing that in malls because other people don't won't to hear them saying bad things.I don't agree with them kicking out groups of people because anyone should be able to go to the mall.

I don't agree, people should be able to say what they would like to say but just not in front of young children because then the kids would pick up the habit.

I don't think it's fair that we cannot cuss or hang out with more than 5 people at the mall. Celebrities and adults do it all the time and they never hear a word for doing that. We all should have the same rights that adults and famous people have, just because we're younger, we shouldn't have a double, or even triple standard.

I think that being kicked out for swearing and staying in big groups. Not everyone wants to hear dirty words all the time when they are trying to have fun. But, I think being in groups of 5+ is not bad until things get out of hand and then it might be necessary in order to stop a gang from hurting something or someone. I think cussing should not be included in the right to free speech because it disturbs the peace of other good people.

I think it's fair about the cussing, but I go to the mall with a lot of people, and we have more than 5 people. I don't really think its fair about the yelling. What if you got kidnapped and you yelled or screamed for help? No one would come and help you. (Or would they?)

i don't think all of the policy is fair. I do believe that bpeople shouldn't yell or cuss but i do think you should be able to have a group bigger than five. Some people like to go shopping with their friends and most people have more than five friends. I can see why yell could disturb other costumers and cussing could too. I don't see how a group larger than five can harm anyone though

I think it is fair in one way, but on the other hand it is going against the 1st Ammendment. Which says we have free speech. People shouldn't cus in public places or at all. I think if you are in a group of people more than five and you are behaving they should not make a big deal of it, but if you are with a group and they are doing something bad than I would do something.

I THINK THAT IT IS NOT FARE BECAUSE IT REALLY DOESTNT GIVE ANYONE ANY FREEDOM TO DO WHAT EVER THEY WANT JUST LIKE THE FIRST AMENDMENT SAYS THAT YOU HAVE THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND THEY ARENT ALOWD TO GROUP WIHT MORE THEN 5 IN THE MALL BUT IN ALABAM YOU CAN GROUP WITH HOW EVER MANY YOU WANT I REALLY DISAGREE WITH THIS DECISION.I THINK THAT ITS UN FAIR.:) :) :)

I think that "some" of the mall policies are unfair. If your cussing or yelling I believe you should have to leave, but if your with more than five people, that's a little unreasonable. If today in America kids could learn tobe more mature and just act the right way we wouldn't have this problem.

I think that the mall policy is fair, because since the mall is owned by private buisnesses so it seems fair to me. Its like if you owned a store, and you didnt want anyone to cuss in it you have the right to kick that person out for not obeying the rules of your store. If the mall was owned by the government it would be a diffrent story. But I do agree.

I dont think its fair to kick someone out of the mall for those reasons. You should be able to have more than 5 people in a group.
I do not think you should cuss anywere but some people do ot every were they go they cant get kicked out every were.If they cuss you should just ignore it.

I do think that this is fair. In the Mall there are little children that do not need to be exposed to that kind of language. I think that this is very nesicary.

Anonymous said...

I think it is fair because there might be little kids there and they could hear one of those words and that could be there first word and that would not be good.now the grouping of five is not that fair cause what if you have a big family and you cant go to the mall with them just cause you have a big family.

The first amendment has parts to it: Freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly. I think everyone should have these rights. Even the Cubans. I actually express my rights.

Anonymous said...

I think the Cubans are treated unfairly. I think the Cubans are treated with much less care than we are in a mall. I think the mall policy is fair, because cursing is bad and wrong. This is defing the the first ammendment, free speech, but this private land. The owner or owners can tell you what to do while you are on their property.

I think that the rule of yelling and cursing are not a bad rule. The rule about you can not have five or more people with you is not a necessary rule. It is not fun going to the mall when you have five screaming teenagers harassing you while you are trying to shop.

Anonymous said...

Well, I think that walking in a group or being with a group of more than five or you get shown the door is not necessary. I think that a lot a teenagers "swear" I don't but I know for a fact that alot of teens do. Being shown the door though I think is a little much unless they are really out of hand then it might be necessary to show them the door. Unless they are affending anyone.

I think the rule is fair. The rule is just there to keep you safe. There are some people in mall that act up and need to leave, but most people are just there to shop. People do not want to hear people yell in a store.

Anonymous said...

I think that it is fair that if you yell or cuss that you get kicked out. But I don't think that it is fair that you can't go to the mall with five or more people because then you wouldn't be able to hang out with all of your friends at the same time.

Anonymous said...

I THINK THAT IT IS FAIR BUT I DONT THINK THAT IT IS FAIR TO ONLY HANG OUT WIHT 5 FRIENDS.

Anonymous said...

I do think this mall policy is fair because if there was a regular family with young children going out on a shopping trip, bad language and rude actions would be very inappropriate for them. When you go to the mall or any other public stores you do not want to be around those kind of things. Kicking the kids out is a very good solution to help this problem.

I think that walking in a group with more than five and be shown the door is not necessary. I am a family of six and if we all go to the mall and maybe have a friend or two then we would be shown the door and to me thats not fair and their losing money. I can understand if pepole are cusing then definally they need to be kick out of the mall.

Anonymous said...

I think it is fair for them to say they can't cuss or yell but I don't think it's fair for them to say people of a group of five or more can't come in because there could be groups from a school or a team that meet there. But they couldn't get in.

I think the mall policy is very fair. It helps keep bad things from happening. It also prevents kids from being encouraged to say bad things or do bad things. I think that it will help a lot and make the mall a better place.
